Do Good Art Club Profile: King Owusu
Welcome to Do Good Art Club, our non-profit capsule collection platforming emerging artists we care about, and raising money for the causes they care about. Each artists work is featured across a limited edition collection of hero unisex styles, and 100% of the profits will be split equally between three charities; one of each artists’ choosing.
Today is all about King, an artist, illustrator and model from North London. King has chosen to support UK charity Thrive with this project; an organisation who use gardening to bring about positive change in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable.

Hi King! How are you?
Hello Hello, I'm very well thank you.
How would you describe your artistic practice? What mediums and topics do you explore?
I would probably describe my works as playful reflections. Drawing really came to me at a time when I needed to process, create calm and understand, and that’s still how I use it within my practice today; as well as using my art to celebrate the things and people that inspire and motivate me. The mediums I use are mostly paper, ink, acrylic paint and now Gorilla tape; but the list is ever growing and when the words find me I write poetry and I've also been exploring sculpture and 3D art.
We’re so excited about your capsule collection. What inspired the artworks featured on these pieces?
The three artworks were inspired by a series of black and white photographs that I had taken of some of my closest friends. Much like the work Thrive does, I believe our greatest value is in our community, a fact that has become even more evident in our recent history. The ideas and messages that I wanted to share in the artwork were to speak on the importance of self care, as you can only be your best self by loving and taking care of yourself. I wanted to celebrate the love and importance of my support network and how much they have meant to me.
Tell us a bit more about the charity you chose, and why they’re so close to your heart?
Thrive is a charity that uses gardening to bring about positive change in the lives of people that are living with disabilities or in ill health. I initially found out about Thrive over lockdown and I became so enamoured by the work that they do, because we all struggle in our own ways; so I was humbled and moved by the idea of this community here wanting to give that love and support. It comes from just from the good of their heart; and Thrive does just that through such a beautiful and soul enriching medium.
If you were in charge of running the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do?
I’d probably start with a lie-in and a good breakfast. No work before 10:30. The breakfast is obviously pancakes with blueberries, strawberries and maple syrup with hashbrowns and a glass of water, apple juice and hot chocolate with the little marshmallows. Can’t be a global leader on an empty stomach.
What is the creative process like for you? Do you find it calming, chaotic or cathartic?
I think it’s all of those things, because you are pulling out a part of yourself to share which is scary sometimes, especially when you are trying something new. I love experimenting with new materials and techniques. but especially when the spotlight is on, and people are expecting something it can be scary. But as I get into it, I start to have fun. For the most part for me it's really about creating a conversation within myself about what I'm trying to say and what I feel.
What do you hope your artwork will do for others?
I hope that others enjoy seeing / experiencing my work as much as I enjoy the journey making it. I hope that it can inspire others to play and create from a place of unconditional love. I hope it might make others see that we can change the world from the tips of our fingers.

What are you looking forward to from the coming year?
So many things! I’m looking forward to being able to travel and for the world going back to something closer to normality. And for myself there are many things I’m looking to explore creatively.
