Lazy in London with Barbara Ferreira
Last week we were lucky enough to spend an afternoon in London with New York's Barbara Ferreira. At eighteen years old Barbie has been making a positive impact on the fashion world's conception of plus size models in the industry having been signed to NYC's Wilhelmina agency. With i-D magazine and Canadian photographer Petra Collins also noteable fans, we wanted to find out more about the model who is here to make a change. ------------ Hiii. I'm Barbie. I'm from New York and I'm a model/hat connoisseur/actress. Where would we expect to find you on a Friday night? Friday nights are usually the nights I spend with all my friends at my house. I prefer a chilled night with good music and my besties but sometimes we'll go to a rooftop or something... What's your favourite thing about living in New York? The music, the fashion and just the people all around. We have such strong personalities âround these parts that its hard to miss a New Yorker. I also don't mind being steps away from literally any food that I want [haha]. What's been a Fashion Week highlight for you? Beth Ditto at Marc Jacobs. You seem to have become the face of a new generation of 'plus size' models, how do you feel about the plus size label? Do you think this term is still relevant or necessary? I think the term plus size itself isn't an insult or anything. There's nothing wrong with being curvy, plus size or any other label. However I do think the industry has abused it and formed a sort of niche modeling. The term plus size model alienates us curvy ladies from the rest of the fashion industry. It needs to be more inclusive because we don't get the same opportunities as a sample size model. Models are models. If you could walk for any designer who would you choose and why? It'd be amazing to walk for any designer that has dope clothes and would be down to have a thicker girl model them. Who are some of your favourite labels to wear? I'm not much into labels. Most of my clothes are t shirts I steal from my roommate. Who's your biggest celeb crush right now?
