Personal Space : Illustration Special
Having sent our in house design team on a journey into the deepest depths of the milky way to bring you a capsule collection, that is quite literally out of this world, we figured it was time to share our personal space. Â So we asked some of our favourite local creatives to shed light on their own extra terrestrial experiences with space and its many oddities.
Whether its alien invasions, toy collections, conspiracy theories or just the glow in the dark stars on their wall, we were interested to see what makes outer space such an era-defying obsession for generation after generation of star gazers...

"The inspiration behind this particular piece is the 2001 teen movie classic Donnie Darko! The film is influenced by the concept of 'worm holes' in space, which is a scientific theory exploring space and time travel. I've been drawing cheeky worms in apples a lot recently, so decided to merge the two." Laura Gee www.lauragee.co.uk (watercolour & ink) "I was inspired by sixties sci-fi costumes of space women, how they are shown as powerful, perhaps preying on a lost spaceman".Annu Kilpeläinen www.annukil.com (acrylic & pen)
"The best ride to get around space is surely a Bubble Cadillac. Wheels for cruising on planets, motors for flying, a plant shelf to provide oxygen and the big bubble roof to float in water. Of course when you park up you'll need some fencing to keep the aliens out".

"A visitor from the planet Gnar"
Alex Mellon www.cargocollective.com/alexmellon (digital) "Being stuck on an interstellar journey with Raoul Duke and Dr Gonzo from Fear and Loathing, whilst they hallucinate and lose their minds is a definite winner for the worst space trip ever. Once you're on the journey, you're stuck until they finally run out of things to melt their minds. Buy the ticket. Take the ride."Ellie Andrews www.ellie-andrews.co.uk (mixed media)
"This piece is inspired by the the launch of NASA's plant production system, and how plants can be grown in space. I was interested in how therapeutic horticulture could improve one's state of mind when travelling through space.Russel Taysom www.rtaysom.tumblr.com (fineliner & digital)
"Inspired by a misspent youth playing sideways scrolling shoot 'em ups on the Commodore 64 . I spent many happy summers with the curtains closed to avoid the reflection on the tv whilst travelling through space and blasting away martians".

"The best way for me to get ideas from my head onto paper is to go with my gut and draw the first things that come to mind. This usually results in a "flash-sheet. Did you know theoretically there are more stars in space than there are grains of sand on earth?"
