I T A S H A

Literally translated to “painful car”, Itasha is a Japanese term given to a group of people who decorate the bodies of their cars with fictional characters from anime, manga or video games. Predominantly these are “cute” female characters with cars typically entirely dedicated to either a single specific character or show.

Decorations usually involve precise paint schemes, vinyl wraps and further modifications to the car itself which are often achieved by the owners at their own expense as a personal hobby.

Enlisting the help of Tokyo Tuner, we met up with four Itasha owners on a Sunday evening in the depths of an underground car park in Akihabara- a district famed for its Otaku culture to shoot items from our current Weird In Japanese collection.
